About The Artwork

"Campbells Consommé Soup Disaster in Purple" is a 40” x 30” original painting on canvas and is part of my "Luxurious Disaster: A 21st Century Tale of Love, Fame & Tragedy" series of pop artworks. In my own female critique of art history, I have frequently drawn on iconic male artists of the 20th century such as Andy Warhol, Sigmar Polke, Robert Indiana and Roy Lichtenstein, creating works that reinterpret their trademark styles. With this series of artworks, I have created a loosely connected group of paintings which take as their subjects vintage advertising images, Andy Warhol Campbell’s Soup cans, 20th Century Americana, consumer products, Louis Vuitton and Chanel luxury fashion luxury logos, iconic imagery, politics, classic Greek & Roman sculpture, prescription drugs and the concept of failing technology through glitch computer data corruption. In this work, I'm paying particular homage to one of my influences, Andy Warhol. These original hand-painted and silkscreened, unique one-of-a-kind artworks appropriate source material from history, social media, pop culture, art history, vintage newspapers and the local shopping mall. I use oil paint, enamel and screen printing as a means to fix my images on canvas. These works are a critical take on the haves versus the have-nots while maintaining a sense of humor. I reinterpret the image of an iconic pop art soup can through the process of cutting, deconstruction and reassembling to create familiar and iconic artworks that have been painted to appear that computer data has a glitch and become corrupted over time. By reconstructing the 1962 soup can paintings through simulated data corruption, cutting and rearranging elements and adding graphic and abstract lines, I reacquire an assembled form by weaving back together the visual in a constant coming and going between abstraction and figuration. The resulting work explores the strong historic recognizability of an image, after decades of being memorized in the brain. Exploring how the brain can still recognize even just small deconstructed portions of a known artwork is my goal. Questioning what happens when our brain stores an image or shape so well, even if broken and rearranged, is integral to the process of repainting this series of artworks that hold deep memories and ties to my family. I am also speaking to the visual power of wealth, fashion, life, death and money. The result? Art that hopefully takes collectors to new and sometimes nostalgic and introspective places.
