ABOUT THE ARTWORK

When I had my galleries with big walls and lots of space for large paintings, I delighted in painting many Asian images. This is one. It is based on an ancient tapestry with the horsemen only inches tall. I loved the expressions so much that I had to paint them. The painting began with tissue paper glued to the surface of the canvas rather roughly. Then I began a process of rubbing by hand various blues into the background. Layer by layer the background became richer in color. Once I was satisfied with that area, I painted the horsemen. On top of it all, I rubbed a delicious gold paint over the whole canvas. The result is quite lovely with the gold picking up light here and there creating an antique look to the whole creation. It is a very beautiful painting. Enjoy!

“Bright and happy, sweet and whimsical” are the words that have been associated with my art and creations for over forty years. Whether in the form of original paintings or serigraphs, designs for clothing, purses, wallpaper, greeting cards, ceramics, baby bibs and children's books, even a King Features newspaper panel it is always happy in nature and free-spirited in style. Delightful beach scenes, delicate seascapes, colorful florals, sensitive Asian designs and contemporary landscapes, plus an extensive line of art for children filled 26 Sally Huss Galleries throughout the US and Japan and Switzerland in the 1980’s. During that time this happy art found its way into millions of homes and offices across the country, including those of Clint Eastwood, Kirk Douglas, Larry Hagman, Joel Gray, Mitt Romney, and more. Prior to a career in art, I spent my youth developing my tennis talents, becoming National and Wimbledon Junior Champion and eventually a Wimbledon semi-finalist in singles and doubles in the Women’s Division. This was before the open era in tennis. With no professional opportunities available in the sport, I changed directions – working in television for Ralph Story, in film for Samuel Goldwyn, Jr., and then in music running Paul Simon’s music publishing company. In the late 70’s I married Marv Huss, former Head of Advertising and Promotion for Hallmark Cards. We created a tennis and health resort in Aspen. Again, change was in order. We made our way to California where we combined our talents (his promotion and mine art) and set about developing a line of Sally Huss Galleries offering my art, licensed products and writings. When 9/11 hit, retail closed down and my focus became children’s books. Now that particular catalog of books numbers over 100! At this particular time, painting has again returned to my life as I have begun using the Saatchi format to reach buyers and designers around the world with my happy art.
