ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I have always been in love with the symbol of a sea star. Ever single day that I beachcomb, I look for one - but I haven't been lucky yet on the NJ Shore. I did, however, find a star shaped metal cookie cutter on the beach while looking for sea glass this winter. I think of it as a gift from the ocean - the next best thing! This particular chocolate chip sea star is one that I've seen pictures of in the beautiful ocean life books my son reads at home. I find this particular animal to be so whimsical and fun, and was inspired to paint a number of beautiful sea star species that you'll also see in my portfolio including a royal sea star, and a blue sea star.

Ashley Lucas is an artist who loves to work in collaboration with mother nature - more specifially - the sea. Her artist name is Lady Lucas. After working primarily in chidren's illustration and design for most of her career as an artist, Ashley's trajectory changed as a direct result of the pandemic. By trading city life for a place by the ocean in 2020 with her young son and husband, she experienced a spiritual awakening that directed her towards starting a sea glass and coastal arts business in January 2022 called, 'Sook & Hook' - named after two naughty seaside squirrels who eat pinecones and stash candy wrappers in the garden. Ashley grew up in Lancaster, PA and enjoyed a childhood of creativity, gardening and marveling at the beauty of animals. She graduated from NYU Tisch's School of Film & Television in 2004, and became involved with the Jersey City Arts community for over a decade. Lucas participated in many solo and group art shows over the years, as well as the annual art tours and the ART150 Art Fair.
