Circles No. 5 was the 5th painting of a series of 24 paintings with the circle as the subject. when I finished this painting I believed it need something to bring out the colors so I taped the entire finished painting with strips of tape ripped into uneven shapes and then painted whatever was showing with multiple layers of white paint. I will share with you that this action terrified me a bit since I was pretty satisfied with the painting at this stage but I believed it needed more and happily, I was right. LOL. I am very satisfied with the new dimension that was brought to Circles No. 5 from this process. This is a mature, intelligent piece of art that will bring comfort to the soul of the viewer. It is a non judgmental piece of art which will draw you into a depth that is only realized after prolonged viewing. The longer you sit with Circles No. 5 the more depth you will experience. I choose to paint with acrylic paints because of the brightness of the colors and the faster drying time allows me to paint in multiple layers in hours rather than weeks as is the case with oil paints. I chose to mount these paintings on C-Bond Canvas Board because they are easier to frame and hold up to shipping and handling well, also, I like to paint on a hard surface rather than a flexible one, like stretched canvas, because it gives me more control of brush strokes during the painting process.

I am Kenneth Colwill, an Abstract Painter, a native of Manhattan, New York and have resided on Long Island since 1964. I'm a self taught painter who started painting in 1962 at the age of ten. I was influenced by the works of Vincent Van Gogh. From the beginning painting was as essential to my being as breathing. I have painted in many genres and was a surrealist painter for thirty years. Eight years ago after a near death experience, I “forgot” how to paint. I had to re-teach myself how to paint. My style of painting changed dramatically and I became absorbed by abstraction and fell in love with the brightness and versatility of acrylic paint. As an abstract painter I have grown and matured in consistency and design and am still evolving today. I had a quirky habit of throwing out my paintings when I got tired of looking at them. For me, the value of painting is in the process of the painting itself, not in the end result. Due to my daughters influence, I have stopped discarding my paintings, and am now sharing, showing and selling them. For this reason I have only a few paintings from my earlier years, the rest have been sold or discarded during my "discarding" years. Private Collections I have sold paintings to multiple private collectors on Long Island and Manhattan NY. Public Collections "Sacred Heart" Franciscan Friars of Compassion Friary, South Gastonia, NC. Donated 2016. "Passion" Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton RC Church, Ronkonkoma NY. Donated 2010.
