ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Colliding Waves is a 30 x 40 inches (76 x 101cm) realist oil painting on canvas. It is inspired by an early morning walk along the beach on the English south coast. A bright and sunny morning, the sea was lively and the waves were colliding with each other from behind and merging together at the front. "I love painting the sea. The result is a painting that is in part realist, part abstract and part impressionistic. The fluidity of the paint echoes the fluidity of the water". Christopher Witchall"s unsentimental approach to his subjects combine traditional painting techniques with the realism and cool detachment of photography. The painting is on a deep edge canvas with white edges which does not require framing and is ready to hang.

I am a British realist artist whose subjects include seascape, urban architecture and landscape, particularly the farmlands of the Cambridgeshire fens in east England, where I have lived, explored, painted and photographed of over 30 years. I studied Fine Art at York School of Art and Lancaster (Preston Polytechnic) in the 1970's and have continued to paint and regularly exhibit. After a long and happy career as an art gallery manager, curator and gallery owner I turned full-time professional artist in 2010. My work combines a love for traditional painting techniques with a fascination with the language and conventions of photography. My paintings reside in private collections throughout the UK, USA, Europe, Australia, Singapore and Japan.
