In several of her recent painting series, Chi-Sui Wang ponders the relationships between images and time, and images in memory. Beginning with the Rainscape series, images have gradually loosened from the oppression of over aggregation, a lively liberating result of a multi-stage exploration. Despite their frenzy, the images remain rational. The ways in which subjective consciousness gives rise to judgments about objects and even emotional projections within the painting points to the marvelous process of memory in the function of cognition. Her choice of ambiguity as a subjective narrative method is increasingly clear in the Rainscape series. The paintings form a parenthetical-like middle ground in which she locates her bodily senses, and enables viewers to move freely throughout this unconstrained domain, bringing along another subjective gaze. Interestingly, the blurred and wanton distortions of scenes and objects do not detract from the possibilities for readings.
