Conflict was a piece created in 2000 that explores deeply conflicting feelings about several areas of my life that were undergoing rapid change simultaneously. This painting a visual snapshot of the time at it's most chaotic before the process of working through those emotions and thoughts to resolve them and bring them into alignment. Oil on canvas, 16x20.

My artistic journey is to craft captivating visual narratives that kindle profound and individualized emotional connections within those who engage with my creations. Each piece serves as a frozen fragment of time, a moment preserved for introspection and communal exploration. My wellspring of inspiration draws from inner sentiments, imaginative musings, the splendors of the natural world, and the harmonies of music. My art delves into themes of tension, motion, isolation, and connectivity. While my work predominantly aligns with the realm of abstract painting, it reverberates with the echoes of surrealism, modernism, and a subtle, yet poignant, narrative thread. This amalgamation of styles could be classified as metamodernism and represents my way of preserving the spirit of traditional analog artistry in a world increasingly dominated by pixel-perfect precision. The act of crafting art is inherently flawed and beautifully unique, a personal journey that both artist and observer partake in. When my work is contemplated, it becomes a symbiotic experience, allowing viewers to weave their own significance into the fabric of each piece. In my creative process, I am drawn to the vibrancy of colors, the interplay of contrasting values, and the elegant dance of lines that conspire to manifest intricate forms within the illusion of shallow subject depth. My choice of mediums varies, with oil and acrylic paint being my preferred choices for larger works, while smaller pieces may use a diverse array of media. This amalgamation of traditional painting techniques with contemporary tools and substances grants me the artistic freedom to bring my visions to life, preserving the imperfections and unique intricacies of human expression. James Cowgill, an artist rooted in Fairfax, Virginia, seamlessly traverses two realms of creativity. With one hand firmly planted in the traditional art world, he wields the transformative power of oil and acrylic paints. In parallel, he explores the dynamic landscape of interactive pixel artistry, serving as a Creative Director harnessing the potential of game engines to craft immersive, interactive experiences for screens and virtual reality. The interplay between these two realms inspires and enriches his creative approaches, infusing his work with a unique and multifaceted perspective. Bio James's artistic journey was sparked during his Ohio upbringing, where he began sketching with a pencil from the very moment he could hold one.
