This work was inspired by a microscopic photo of a coral reef. As a former scientist, I still miss the wonder of looking under the microscope into our own world that remains a bit hidden from us but just beneath the surface. Though the picture had some artificial coloring to it, I felt it captured the essence of the corals and I knew I had to bring this reef to the canvas. Neon, radioactive, and so essential to our ecosystems, a foundational creature without whom neither you or I would be. Ocean's also have a deep spiritual ring for me as someone that grew up very close to the water. I used the brush to build the neon crags of the creature and lovingly folded the grooves like a baker desperate to not overwork their dough. Finally, spots or new blooms pepper the page. I hold this piece close to my heart in the juxtaposition of coral bleaching that threatens our world. May there be many rainbows that blossom just below the surface of the sea as our earth heals.

A historically American woman, aspiring adapting and attempting Parisienne. I left my American capitalist hellscape behind for... an equally challenging environment abroad. Much like explorers of yesterday, equipped with my limited perspective and a fumbly sextant of the spirit for navigation, I try to find my position in our vast cosmos leaving everything I knew behind except a suitcase full of paint, brushes, and ambition.
