ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My latest series evokes movement and color. I do not use a paintbrush. All paintings are done with dripping, pouring, washes, drying methods, gravity and love. This painting is part of the "Twisted" series and depicts the what it used to feel like when walking into the Global Corporate Headquarter...

Paul Roberts is a self-taught, Chicago-based, abstract artist specializing in acrylics and oils on canvas. Paul’s background is that of a corporate lawyer, where he managed large global law firms. Even while practicing, Paul painted whenever time permitted. While able to do both, Paul felt stifled dealing with corporate politics and bureaucracy. Paul tried to fill this void by drinking his way through the American Dream, but this obviously did not work. So, Paul changed everything. This series is the culmination of his complete transformation from darkness to light. Paul does not use paint brushes. He uses paint, water, applicators–spoons, basters, spray bottles, sticks–and gravity. He creates dozens of layers of paint and texture. These layers, sometimes thick and sometimes transparent, create a 3D effect that makes the observer want to reach out and touch the painting. His work is abstract in form and often reflective of nature and geographical elements. Paul’s techniques are often compared to that of a sculptor given his use of texture and manipulation processes. Paul has shown at Gruen Galleries (Chicago); Acqusistions of Fine Art (Hinsdale); RBL Gallery (Chicago); and Studio 312 (Chicago). Paul also holds several solo shows on his own each year, typically selling 10-15 paintings.
