Deep in the Green Wood is a tall painting, 30x40inches and is of a red deer stag appearing in a green pine forest. The greens range from yellow greens to deep blue and purple greens and they complement the vibrant reds of the deer. Most of the canvas is of tall pine trees, some with details of the bark, some as if the trees are just materialising. Behind them is bright light shining through the forest with just a few rays catching the side of the face of the stag who is quite small in relation to the trees in the bottom right corner of the painting. The edges are blurred so that you feel you are zooming into it. I wanted to play on the complementary colours of red and green and I want the ethereal nature of forests and the deer in them to be prevalent. The primal nature of forests is very obvious to anyone who walks in woodland and pine forests especially are fairy tale like and have their own hushed atmosphere when you step into them. I like how walking in a forest immediately takes you off the current time steam as they have not changed much over the centuries (apart from to get smaller unfortunately). The deer are the guardians and watchers in the forests and are a theme I cannot leave alone! Dedicated to everyone else who loves nature and is working to cherish and preserve it. Painted on wide canvas, no frame needed, dark green-blue edges, ready to hang.

Gill Bustamante is a professional artist based in East Sussex who creates large semi-abstract landscape, seascape and wildlife paintings in oil on canvas. Her painting style is very distinct and often fuses art-nouveau, impressionist and semi-abstract techniques with traditional portraiture that reflect her love of nature, animals, birds and the flora and fauna of the landscapes around her. She loves the ancient landscapes of England and her paintings often reflect the magical elements that such landscapes have. Gill’s main working method has been the development of a painting style she terms ‘memory impressionism’. This method involves going walking somewhere, looking at and absorbing the things she sees and experiences, and then returning home to her studio to try and capture an echo or essence of the place from memory - including any wildlife she may have seen. By this method, she captures precise moments in times at different seasons and the feeling she has about them. Gill completed a fine art degree in Brighton in 1983 and has painted since she was three. In her own words: “Painting always makes me happy along with cake, bunnies, driving erratically, BBC 6 music and totally irreverent comedy”.
