About The Artwork

This piece, 'Desert Sunset' comes from remembered experience living in the high desert. Those times opened me to the wild beauty of the southwestern United States. Everything is intensified; colors gain a degree of clarity and sharpness not seen in the coastal areas to the west where I grew up and live now. The land, heat, and desert color each play a role in this piece.Layering oils mixed with cold wax and using zip lines for added texture, this piece plays with subtle gradients and hard tonal shifts. This creates a tension to keep the eye moving around the surface. Cold wax also gives me the ability to play with texture and there is a visual 'tactile' quality to the work. The surface of this piece is a mixture of matt areas with a light texture to smooth areas with a satin sheen. Areas with this finish have been burnished and buffed out with a soft cloth. This is 2 joined cradled panels.

A modern American artist, Georgia Gibbs’ colorful abstracts are strongly inspired by the landscape and inland coastal area of California. Her works can be monochromatic and still with the weight of dense fog or colorful and alive like a hot summer afternoon. The viewer is teased by a sense of the familiar and responds to an emotional nuance, always present in the base notes. Recently she has embraced an additional medium. Using image captures of her garden and the natural world close at hand she has begun to compose eco-portraits. This developing series shows a world undressed, yet not unadorned and invites the viewer to into an intimate relationship with the world underfoot. Appointed Fairfax, California AIR (Artist in Residence) 2018-2020
