About The Artwork

The mother of the British Modernist Movement, Lesbian, Feminist and civil rights activist, Doris Hatt. Doris' art and story inspired me to paint this portrait of her. Her home and studio are in the same town as my own small studio and gallery. I've worked from old B&W photos of her from the 1930s, from which I have tried to capture not just a likeness but a sense of the pure unadulterated creativity she is celebrated for. This is painted in watercolour with using granulation and heavy brush strokes to create a striking and engaging image. From a recent newspaper review of this painting: "Seen in the window of Tony's studio, her eyes and smile instantly create a warmth such as only seen with the Mona Lisa, but here, a luminance, hopeful but heavy heart shares a story of a history lost. This is one of the true master pieces of modern portraiture, intimate in a way not seen before in art. All I can do is beg you to see this love song in paint between artist and muse in person." -SW Arts Review.
