Musing Surf has become one of my personal favorites. My original idea was to incorporate many different blue tones and implied textures, while exploring emotion and mood. The title is inspired by the song Dreams of Surf by Vangelis. As with all of my paintings, this is created on cradled wood panel. The sides are unpainted/natural wood and are 1.5 inches deep. This artwork is properly protected with multiple isolation coats and several layers of archival varnish, which gives it a soft satin, almost matte sheen. As with all of my paintings, the texture is implied, the surface is almost completely smooth. Despite their names, my art is nonobjective. I am inspired by texture, happenstance and the patina of worn surfaces; natural and manmade. I see grace and nostalgia in their visual history. I think this sensitivity allows me to approach my work with an uninhibited perspective on aesthetics, using color and visual texture as the primary elements in my geometric compositions. Each painting takes me on its own journey in which I intuitively listen and respond, incorporating of a variety of techniques and countless layers of acrylic and mixed media, constantly accumulating and removing the applied materials until each piece finds its own end.

Creating art is a vital act for me. My nonobjective, mixed-media paintings focus on implied texture. Although the surface is completely smooth, the abstract imagery reveals the beauty and nuance of patina, texture, and deterioration. I see beauty in what others overlook. I appreciate the complexity of simple things. My sensitivity allows me an uninhibited perspective on aesthetics, using color and visual texture as my primary subjects. I've studied art and design through college and formal education, but my current process and technique has been borne through consistent experimentation, trial, and error. Although I add layers of materials to create my surface, I also remove just as much by use of abrasives and by chemically “deteriorating” the paint. This series of intuitive acts of accumulation and reduction pushes the materials to their extremes, creating unique patinas. The resulting painting is an escape from the outside world, and reflects a tension between control and fluidity.
