Drifting was inspired by a trip down the Martha Brae river in Jamaica. The calm tropical river was surrounded by dense green landscape that gave me a feeling of isolation from the rest of the world. I am fixated on tropical waters and the life that they support. Living in England I most look forward to visiting new places such as Martha Brae and I enjoy immersing myself in the memories by painting them. This in affect creates heightened senses and surprising compositions as they have been filtered through my mind over time.

Through the process of painting with oils on canvas, Jacob Lucas creates vibrant and otherworldly landscapes that appear both playful and expressive. By using collage, water colour and pencil as a starting point for his landscapes, surprising juxtapositions of plants, trees, animals and other structures are pieced together allowing Lucas to construct his own landscape experiences through the process of painting. Lucas also plays with ideas of seduction and paranoia within his landscapes. By using dreams and nostalgic memories, as well as inspiration taken from both traditional and contemporary landscape paintings, his paintings can appear artificial and alien in that features of the natural world are transformed and applied in strange and unfamiliar territories.
