About The Artwork

He lived alone in a hut at the edge of a swamp. The locals called him "The Skull". His strange appearance, frightening even, did not do justice to its peaceful character. It looked like a living skeleton. He was young and healthy and, despite his cadaverous look, he wasn’t in danger of falling apart. He lived on fish, wild plants, frogs. His clothes were rags exchanged several years ago against woven wicker baskets. Few visitors were passing by his poor hut. All because they have lost their way. They fled his kind hospitality. A night of terrible storm, he heard a knock at his door. When he opened it, he saw a beautiful girl, cold trembling in her luxurious clothes. When she saw him, she uttered a cry of terror. "Do not be afraid! I will not hurt you!". The softness of his voice calmed her. And she decided to trust him. He helped her dry off, warm up, gave him food and drink and he listened. The long hours of solitude had made him a very good audience. Her name was Almanoga. She had fled her family who wanted her to marry an old man. She sought refuge with an aunt who lived in a nearby town. Her education had not prepared her for the dangers of the journey. Pursued by robbers, she had sought salvation in the forest and got lost. “I regret my stupid behavior. I long to be back home!” "Tomorrow we will travel. I'll go with you and I'll protect you." The trip was peaceful. He told her stories about the animals, the plants and the flowers they saw along the way. She recalled her privileged life as a young girl. And when they arrived at their destination, the skull was desperately in love. He had never seen anything so lovely than this girl. Dazzled by her beauty, he immediately offered her to stay and live with him. "Marry me. There is room for two in this house. You will lack nothing. " She paused a moment and then said to him. "I am very happy and flattered but before making a decision, I want to see my father" Alas, protected by the walls of his home and the presence of her family at her side, she showed her true colors. "What a fool you are! I still prefer to marry an old man rather than spend my life in an unhealthy cabin beside a smelly swamp! Look at you! You are really ugly! I would not have children who will look like you! " Mortified, he wandered the streets of the city, with a heavy heart. But he soon realized that Almanoga was not the only girl to live in this city. And there were prettier than her. And smarter, more funny, more courageous, more kind, more generous. He stayed a few months. He watched the people. When he saw Almanoga, she turned her head disdainfully, or she sneered with her friends. When he returned home, he had a plan. He began to hunt animals with shiny fur, birds with colorful feathers and sold them at the market. He quickly amassed a capital with which he could employ experienced workers. Then he hired tailors and milliners. He became rich. To improve his appearance, he put gold rings in his ears, dressed up in luxurious clothes, hid his baldness with a mischievous hat. Fortunately, the thinness and flexibility of his body gave him an elegance that made up for the ugliness of his repulsive face. Women and girls started to smile at him. He bought a nice house and waited patiently. And one day Almanoga, accompanied by her family, rang again at his door. She told him: "I was wrong about you. I've changed my mind and I am ready to marry you. " The Skull was silent a moment, then replied: "I am pleased and flattered by your proposal, but I refuse. I am looking for a woman who loves me for my qualities, not just for my money. " He threw them out of his house, put on travel clothes and hit the road. The air in the city was worth nothing to him. He regretted the marsh and thought to make some improvements to the cabin.

Angels and Demons: The flowers and I have a long term relationship. Two years ago, I decided to paint them again. Flowers represented what I’m longing for: calm, beauty, harmony and serene strength. I was also interested to show how our surroundings influence us, our mood, our thoughts. Finally, I may be an optimist, because even if I changed the flowers, their color, their texture. they were still peaceful, beautiful and glorious. Then, a few months ago, I started painting monsters (chimeras). I’m not the only one who is fascinated by them. Through history and cultures, artists have represented monsters. It seems ugliness is no less fascinating, than beauty. I think flowers and monsters are two sides of the same coin. And I’m ready to face my demons. Or ours. Nobody is perfect…
