About The Artwork
In this series of works, I explore the relationship between the body and emotional memories. Corporeality becomes relevant to the process itself, in the sense of how the body participates with the procedure and space of both the object of the image and the drawing and their composition. Physical experience has become an integral part of the whole process, also making physical feeling a part of the work. Using raw canvas, coated only with diluted acrylic base, physical manipulation of the canvas, from the preparation process, choosing the size of the frames, which are 165x165cm, which is my height and arm span, through stretching the canvas and preparation. I wanted these otherwise 'invisible' elements to be present in a new way, to be a visible process by intentionally seeing traces where the canvas is stapled to the frame and thus begin to participate in the work itself as part of the painting. The size of the image is important precisely because it is a space that I can cover with my body. Transforming a small drawing, which serves as a visual starting point, into a large format painting is a challenge in several ways. I am developing my methodology through this research and experimentation, by combining different techniques and materials. Raw and expressive strokes emphasize the surface of the canvas, as well as the bold use of different materials. Informal composition and independence from any visual references in reality, which is reflected in non-figurative scribbles and patterns, represent freedom, spontaneity, and openness of image interpretation. The gesture is also related to corporality and is directly related to the exploration of the sensations that certain movements evoke. Just enjoying the sensuality of painting, and the act of performance and process, as a struggle between self-expression and the chaos of the unconscious, are intimately connected to nature and emotions.
