This painting represents my inward journey to peace. Following my heart and intuition. Living in an urban jungle, Miami, there is constant juxtaposition; a concrete path amidst the beautiful flora and fauna. Living here as an artist and art therapist, I have a great desire to express myself, offer light to those in need and be with my family. I am grateful for the opportunity to help youth who are at-risk in the institution of the public school system. I ponder my need for independence, finding my voice and how can I best serve others through art? I go within, through meditation to find my light, strength, balance and the answer to peace. Each element of the painting has an underlying meaning and a connection to South Florida. The labyrinth has always been a symbol in my art, representing the journey and path. The tiny stars in the background are the constellations found on the Miami horizon line this summer. Comet orchids, Birds of Paradise, and night-blooming Jasmine are common in this region. The Pygmy Rattlesnake represents the hidden life lessons that we encounter on our journey. The Hawk moths are attracted to the light. Moths represent transforming emotional energy away from drama and into something closer to the heart. Symbol of change, new directions, and revealing that which has been hidden. Through this process of reflection I answer my own question, my presence and energy is what I offer. As the poet Rumi once wrote, "In your light I learn to love. In your beauty, how to make poems. You dance inside my chest where no on sees you, but sometimes I do, and that sight becomes this art." Namaste my friends. The light in me honors the light in you. ~~~Leah~~~
