ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Does art compensate for the absence of something? A portrait of a lost loved one, a still life of a vase of beautiful flowers long since wilted? If it does, it will not be able to compensate in any way for a disappearing world. The Floe series of paintings refers to the disappearing ice floes in the Arctic and the devastating impact that their loss will have on our world. The scenes are imagined but informed by countless images of the melting ice caps, still mesmerizingly beautiful even in their destruction. Nothing will ever compensate for their loss, which we must strive to prevent. Floe 4 is painted using exceptional quality Old Holland and Winsor and Newton Artists' series oil paints and mediums with the highest ratings of permanence and light-fastness. Sand is permanently affixed t the surface through the binding in the paint. The painting is on a professional quality Winsor and Newton canvas panel. The painting will be packaged following best-practice guidelines and despatched by signed for and fully tracked courier as assigned and monitored by the Saatchi Art team. It is signed on the reverse and comes with a Saatchi Art certificate of authenticity. I will make a donation from each sale to environmental and conservation charities. Thank you for looking.

My work navigates the delicate balance between representation and abstraction, creating a sanctuary from the pressures of modern life. Each piece is a visual retreat, offering viewers a tranquil space to rest their gaze and find peace. Inspired by ever-changing landscapes and the subtle interplay of light and colour my paintings aim to evoke a sense of calm and introspection. Through my art, I strive to capture fleeting moments of beauty and serenity, inviting the viewer to pause and reflect. The natural world serves as both my muse and my canvas, where I explore the harmony and tension between the seen and the unseen. My creative process is a meditative journey, where each application of paint, either through brushwork or other tools, is a step towards uncovering the quiet elegance of our surroundings. I hope my work provides a moment of respite and a reminder of the simple, yet profound, beauty that exists in our everyday lives. There is a sense of quietude in my work that perhaps reflects the years I spent living in Japan where the beauty of space and stillness is itself a sought after aesthetic. Though still, many of the pieces are heavily saturated - the colours vivid and striking. Others provide a space for contemplation and for thoughts to develop and flit around. I am influenced by many artists from Ornulf Opdahl to Mark Rothko, all of whom create a sense of space in their art. Some Reviews.......................................................................................................................................................... A Long Walk over High Ground 6 Oct 2020 When it feels as if the walls are closing in, I shall walk a while in your shoes to the High Ground where imagination can take wing. Thank you, Howard for giving substance to your ‘rememberings’ and sharing your unique internal landscape in this lovely painting......BH Oct 2020 Last Light At Sea 2 Howard Sills 5 Stars A stunning painting. Reminds me of the Monet paintings I once saw in Russia - when you look at the canvas, the image comes out of the blue (colour) and captures the atmosphere of dusk over water. I Love it.
