ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The Elysian Fields, also called Elysium, are the final resting place of the souls of the heroic and the virtuous in Greek and Roman mythology and religion. i love the concept of Ancient Greek Elysium, The Afterlife , the home of The Blessed after death. To awaken into a hyper real landscape of flowers as though its a eternal dusk. From ‘Elysium, in Greek Mythology , originally the paradise to which heroes on whom the gods conferred immortality were sent. It probably was retained from Minoan religion. In Homer’s writings the Elysian Plain was a land of perfect happiness at the end of the Earth, on the banks of the Oceanus. A similar description was given by Hesiod of the Isles of the Blessed. In the earlier authors, only those specially favoured by the gods entered Elysium and were made immortal. By the time of Hesiod, however, Elysium was a place for the blessed dead, and, from Pindar on, entrance was gained by a righteous life. Later writers made it a particular part of Hades, as in Virgil , Aenid Book VI.’ This is an acrylic painting on canvas supplied with fitted hanging gear and it will be packaged in a crate for transportation.

Micheal is very aesthetically informed by Post-Impressionism, biomorphic sculpture, Dadaism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism. Micheal draws inspiration from many of the Beat movement writers, particularly Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski and William S Burroughs, and a plethora of musical genres. Many of the early Abstract Expressionist artists such as Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, Cy Twombly, Clyfford Still and Mark Rothko are often referenced in his works and help contribute towards his artistic thinking. The themes of his work are wide-ranging and include abstract figurative or biomorphic art and abstract expressionism. Playful surrealism, highly coloured and full of motion, using a multitude of mediums. Micheal’s artistic practice encompasses a painterly spiritual cosmology, in which the journey of inner evolution and growth is repeatedly explored. Employing the full spectrum of abstractionist and suggestive modes of representation, his work surveys the depths of the collective unconscious through subtle allusions to personal experiences of travel and transformation. Micheal lived in Iquitos, in the Peruvian Amazon, for two and a half years and conceptually, he is continuously inspired by his deeply transformative experiences with Shamanism, notions of wisdom associated with ancient cultures and the Archaeology of The Sacred. During this time, he developed a strong connection with Amazonia and its flora and fauna and its people. This passion has led him to dedicate himself to both producing art and also to raising funds for the protection of the Amazon and other ecological biomes. Please see his page for more information of the ecological causes that Micheal supports.
