ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Another painting in a series inspired by the Angus Glens in Scotland, particularly Glen Clova. I have a sketchbook full of studies which form the mainspring of information for these paintings. In the summer, the colours of the distant hills combines with the beautiful cerise pinks and purples of the Rosebay Willowherb to make an intensely colourful landscape. Even on a dull day, the foliage close by and the hills beyond still retain this vibrancy. This painting takes the winding river as its main dynamic subject. It leads the way towards those lovely blue and lavender heather covered hills. A small cottage stands in the meadow. The yellow area describes small patches of ragwort growing amongst the reds and grasses. I very much enjoy visiting this part of Scotland and making my sketchbook studies so the series continues to expand! Thankyou for looking.

The landscape is my main source of subject for painting - particularly the orderly impact on the landscape of human habitation and farming. The framework imposed by fencing hedges ditches etc and the impact these divisions have on the land is always interesting. Colours lent to the land for a few months by growing crops is another element. The rather harsh lemon of the rape or mustard crops, the cool blue of a linseed field, the effervescent mixture of echinacea flowers - all these colours provide problems for an artist. While they are very dramatic , visually they don’t sit well with the native trees and hedge colours, but I am drawn to them as a subject on exactly that account. This is what inspires my work - colour.
