The story is what ultimately remains of one’s life, experiences, memories and recollections. Painting to me is the process of creating stories through lines rather than words. I wanted to tell ordinary stories created in the spaces we inhabit. The emotions and experiences seen and felt in the passing of seasons, on my everyday walking route, or during fleeting moments spent in unfamiliar places are recorded as photographs, which become the foundation of my work, I fill up the space occupied by little everyday things with myriad lines, each with its own direction and flow. I take the stories of a place or a subject, vibrating in the cognitive space floating in the air of a place, between the known and the unknowable, and translate them into the visual language of lines. I want to listen to the narrativity that envelopes life using my artistic methodology of lines and text. Taking in a full picture of stories constructed over time, in the process of thoughtfully drawing each line, my work is the liner narrative of the spatiality of the canvas, where the beginning and end of the story is shown in a single frame. I think this is akin to the spatiality of a book, which is a physical compilation of language, shared temporally in a designated order. I admire the act of story making. If I were to compare my work to writing, it would be like a collection of essays based on everyday life. I create personal but universal stories in a corner of a landscape both familiar and strange.

Dagyeom Lee (Jisun Lee) born in Daegu, South Korea. educated in South Korea and Germany. lives and works in Seoul. _ The Swiss artist, Paul Klee said, “A drawing is simply a line going for a walk”, which is about the spontaneity of drawing. Lines on a piece of a drawing are like a magic that seems to happen automatically whether the artist intended or not. The subject going for a walk can be both the artist and the line. A work of art is an artist’s expression of his or her life, making the ingredients of it evolve through the artist’s inner force. Through her work of art, an artist, Dagyeom Lee draws the sine curve of her life as if to write about its endless ups and downs. With her own principles and orders of drawing, she fills the surface of her canvas with colorful lines. The beginning and the end of her story are shown on the canvas without any hint of the sequence because they are visually described on the space of her canvas. Her writing style expressed as a painting doesn’t have the same logic of a written language, which makes the viewers respond to her painting more open-mindedly, so that the spiritual forces awakened in their mind can be the content of her story. The subject matter of her painting, such as flowerpots and walls covered with ivy, which anyone can find easily in the alley of any neighborhood, is expressed in familiar forms, making the viewers sympathize with her own story. _Yoonkyung Kim (Realti Art Space)
