ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Slavery was abolished in the British Colonies in 1834. One of the many key people who made this happen is Mary Prince, who spent some time as a slave in Bermuda. Her devotion, commitment and bravery to such a fundamental right has afforded freedom to many of us today. Bermuda’s enslaved people celebrated emancipation with a competitive cricket game between the towns of Somerset and St.George’s. This game is still played every year and enjoyed by many. This event is known as Cupmatch.
