ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The inspiration for this painting came from this passage in the bible that says "If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit" John 15:5. Society often idolizes productivity, telling us we must constantly perform and "do". This painting challenges this pursuit of productivity and instead presents the concept of fruitfulness which come from a place of being instead of doing. What is shown in the trunk of the tree is a person seated, in a position of rest, with extensive roots in a heart shape. This emphasizes the central importance of an inner life that nourished and rooted.

I am a self-taught Singaporean artist and mother of 3 young children. My original training was in life sciences, in line with my love for nature and living things. I have brought this love of nature and living things into my practice now as an artist. My inspiration comes from creation that exists all around me. Each creature has its own unique kind of beauty, from the mangy street cats and audacious mynahs to the shy and reclusive mouse deer. So much of this is under appreciated. People are often so busy they fail to see what is right before them. Singapore has a precious natural heritage that many people are unaware of. I am often captivated by glimpses of the native wildlife that I encounter in our garden city. I also draw inspiration from my personal experiences and faith. I find the imagery evoked by the Bible both poetic and life giving. I paint because I want to share the joy and wonder I experience with others, to celebrate and draw attention to what is less visible and often overlooked.
