This painting is about a search for identity for a young immigrant female who is caught between two different cultures. Her desire to adopt to a new culture may conflict with her traditions and the expectations she may be getting from her mother. The symbolic objects such as the fishes and the spotted lamb represent the different cultures she is exploring, her desires and hopes to find her identity.

Janice Yang is a figurative painter and illustrator. She was originally born in Connecticut, but moved to South Korea at the age of four, and later returned to the U.S. at the age of sixteen. This cross-cultural experience has had an enormous impact on her life and work. She became interested in the human condition, the overlapping cultures and transformations that the world encounters. Janice’s figurative work combines narratives, symbolic objects, and abstract patterns. The process of art making has become her way of communicating with the world to explore and find her cultural identity.
