About The Artwork

This series of "Heaven's Landfill" paintings explore the issue of migration crisis. The UN Refugee Agency found that 65.6 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide at the end of 2016, many of them were from war torn and poverty stricken regions of the world fled to the west. Civilians including children and women caught up in the crisis, losing family members or friends to the violence and starvation, suffering physical and psychological trauma. The artist wanted to express his deepest respect and condolence by depicting the abandoned life jackets, boats and other debris as the symbol of migrants whose lives were lost in the sea while desperately trying to reach the safe haven. The debris sometime formed mountains and hills in a hauntingly beautiful fashion, contrasted by the star gazing sky above and slowly merged into the existing landscape, optimistically symbolized integration and acceptance, but pessimistically it can also be interpreted as abandonment of human life, vanishing hopes and dreams of many migrant families, questioning the humanity of our society.
