I was thinking about the structure of play, the structure of war, the structure of our society. This started as a painting by my son of jets fighting, a dog fight as he would happily tell you. I love the way the foreground plays with the back, the middle universe of red jet planes top gunning and chasing each other crashes into the arena. The shy fear in the horses eye and the ladies nervous touch to her neck, the smooth bend in the grazing horses neck; submission and dominance playing out. The knitting of the trees in the background to the base pattern of the canvas; from abstract to the scene created. The image plays with the paint in how it is created; integrating reality with play and imagination.

Amy Bernays lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Born in London, she graduated with a BA(honors) in Fine Art from Central St Martins College in 2001. Her paintings are landscapes of personal interaction; poems to the love of line. Working with non-linguistic communication such gesture, body language, lingering looks and gossip. Her work is anthropological and personal, ponderings on the great themes of life, love and leisure. AKA Amelia Bernays Pitti (what systemic sexism?)
