ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Humbaba meme is inspired by tablets 4-6 of the epic of Gilgamesh in which the protagonist enters the Cedar forest with his companion Enkidu. Together they begin to cut down the trees, and in doing so incur the wrath of Humbaba the forest guardian. They defeat him, but as he dies he curses Enkidu to a short and unhappy life, which then comes to pass. With this painting I wished to convey the futility of mans destruction of nature, and create a modern visual metaphor for a theme that has existed for millennia but is still being ignored. The piece is painted in a heavy, yet sparse impasto process in black on black with the colour dragged a scumbled over the top. The wash/glaze of light represents the intervention humbaba. It was my intention to invoke a sense of history and myth with the chosen aesthetic and earthy pallette.

Drawing from the autobiographical, Duncan Morris’s practice involves a fascination with the intangible phenomenon that occurs when our inner world appears to overlay our perception of the outer world. Using rhythmic mark making, lurid colours and ambiguous perspective, his paintings often depict psychological states and are characterised by a dynamic crowding of composition in which lonely figures seem engulfed in a state of quiet introspection. Infused with allusions to mythology, folklore and poetry alongside references to modernist artists such as Morandi, De Chirico and Guston, each painting is a journey, an attempt to find a concise yet visually poetic resolution to the dilemma of perception, reality, memory and dreams.
