ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Everyone thinks of their own ideal world. Just like others, I always dream of my own Utopia whenever I want to run away from dull and repeated daily routine. This "동경하다" series is visualized art work of my imaginative world I dreamed of. I went trips to get rid of my pains from reality, but those travels could not make me forget of all underlying problems I had. Then I came up to design my own planet in outer space to describe my ideas about "Life". Colours of the series were influenced by sentiment. I used very dark colours when I felt down or depressed and painting was my sole consolation. After that, I tried brighter colours and different materials or textures to make a change. Surely it would be quite personal and subjective process to analyze someone's work but I hope viewers to understand my intention and sympathaize with it. In addition, if my works give some comfort to people it will be the most thrilling part of my art activities.

My name is SOYOON CHOI. I live in South Korea. Painting is a kind of unconscious conversation. The Surrealists tried to find creative roots in the unconscious. So, influenced by Freud and Jung's theories, they devoted themselves to creating a new symbolic language that was not there in the past. In this study, I analyzes my work, which expresses surrealistic images based on inherent sensibility. A work of my own is a visual image of the desire inherent in a ritual. This is an expression of desire to expose internal deficiencies and an act to reflect on one's self through conscious consciousness. The theme of my works are summarized into two parts : “The Universe as an imaginary and unknown space”, and “A yearning for the Ideal world. I tried to use my inner inspiration to express images in pictures that did not exist in reality. The images of my work reveal surrealistic expressions. The theoretical background of the expression was analyzed based on surrealistic art. Surrealistic art is based on unconscious theory. In Chapter I, I looked at the theories of Freud and Jung, both of which are theoretical backgrounds for surrealistic art. In Chapter II, I learned about the time when surrealist art emerged, Max Ernst, Joan Maro, and Salvador Dali. Their representative works also helped me learn more about the techniques of surrealistic art, including Frottages and Automatisme. In Chapter Ⅲ, I named my work ‘Expression of self controlled by consciousness and unexpressed’ and compared it to Freud and Jung's theory. I tried to express a new Utopia in my work by putting the emptiness felt in communication and feelings to get away with it. At this time, the universe was reborn in my consciousness as a space where the desire to escape from reality is expressed, and the space where imagination is realized. Therefore, my work can be called ‘The conscious representation of the unconscious’and it is a subject worth continuing to explore.
