ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I titled this painting "Image of the Descending God" even though technically that is the pyramid with the descending snake illusion, called "Temple of Kukulkan" Named la Iglesia (the Church) by the Spanish, probably because it was located right next to the Nunnery, this temple is one of the oldest buildings at Chichén Itzá. Masks of Chac decorate two upper stories. Among the crowd of Chacs there are also an armadillo, a crab, a snail, and a tortoise. These represent the Maya gods, called bacah, whose job it was to hold up the sky. I love the work of Maxfield Parrish and Claude Monet and use their working methods as a departure point for my work. I always try to paint on fine weave linen using glazes for depth and richness, and I follow the time tested principles of painting using archival materials on stabilized linen to create a painting that will last centuries

David Zimmerman was born in Washington, D.C. in 1946.He began his studies at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1964. He continued on in his training with Bill Woodward at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. In order to receive a bacalaureate degree he transferred to George Washington University,where he studied Drawing and Printmaking with Frank Wright. He was granted a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts in 1970.After a brief perod of training with Phillip Pearlstein in Massachusetts, he returned to George Washington University where he again studied with William Woodward and Arthur Hall Smith. He was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting in 1976.
