About The Artwork
Invasion of the Species (2017), a play on Darwin’s classic text, juxtaposes ideas related to both immigration and invasive species. The central figure seeks to restrain both the cattle egret (a non-native bird species to Hawai‘i) as well as various fragments of colorful flotsam and jetsam, while a group of people clinging to the boat, inhabit a no man’s land between the two. Through the intersection of issues related to immigration and invasive species, the work raises questions concerning diversity, survival, change and destruction.
