This painting is part of my first fully abstract painting series. I paint the Aurora Borealis in memory of my daughter Aurora Annette, who died from Sudden Unexpected Infant Death, three days after she and her identical twin sister were two months old. I alchemize my grief, pain, and heartbreak into colorful paintings, inspired by the Aurora Borealis, and I dedicate each one to Aurora Annette. This abstract series serves as the visualization of my years-long journey from primary infertility to the grief after losing one of my twin infants. My artwork is several layers deep, from the literal layers of vibrant metallic acrylic paint and colorshifting glitter pigments to the emotional layers of trauma, depression, grief, and anxiety. The bright colors and sparkly glitter details are a stark contrast to the darker, more complex and complicated emotions that they hold.

Angelina Salgado is a visual artist and has always been drawn to bright colors, which are a hallmark of her artwork and personal style. She creates colorful paintings in watercolor and gouache, featuring holographic and iridescent details, created with colorshif paint. The paints are handmade in small batches and contain cosmetic-grade, light-reflective, metallic, and glitter pigments, which makes the colors of the Aurora shift subtly when viewed from different angles. Angelina is the brand ambassador for three of those artisan paintmakers: , , & . Angelina Salgado is visual artist and art educator, based in NJ. The eldest daughter of Filipino immigrants, Angelina was born and raised in New York. She received her AAS in Fine Arts from the Fashion Institute of Technology, pursued a double major in Art History and Studio Art at Hunter College, then earned her Master’s degree in Art and Museum Education from the City College of New York. She has taught in several art museums and cultural institutions across NYC, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Brooklyn Museum.
