ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Zaporizhia kozak, hero of many military raids, Moldovian lord (1577 - 1578). By legend he was brother of Moldovian leader Ivan Voda Luty, was physically very strong and very high and even could break by hands horseshoes (by this reason kozaks gave him this nickname Pidkova – literally ‘horseshoe’), could stop chariot with 6 horses and opened the oak gate by ox horn. He took part in military sea raids under leadership of Samuel Kishka. Later he guided kozak floats and made wars against Tatars living by sea villages. After military crash in war against united Turk-Transnistrian-Moldovian armies, Ivan Pidkova had to leave Yassy town. He was arrested in Poland and tortured in presence of huge mass of people and Turk ambassadors in Lviv in 16 of June 1578. Buried in Kaniv monastery.
