ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My practice is exploring colour, following on from the modern history of colour and abstraction. I'm not producing representational work but rather an exploration of joy and energy through the relational use of colour. In this piece I'm exploring the musicality of colour, vibrancy paced with subdued, dark enhanced with brightness, warmth tempered by cool colours. The result is an invocation of the days of early jazz, craziness blended with harmony, vitality mixed with the sublime, dark feelings becoming soulful and enriching. This ready to hang work is a tribute to jazz days.

COLOUR, HARMONY AND CHAOS: EXPLORING RELATIONAL AESTHETICS. Originally from England and now living in Australia, I've been studying and practising art since 1969. My desire is to explore the relational aesthetics of colour. I am puzzled by the limits that colour theory places on the trained eye. We are led to believe that colours clash, chaos lacks appeal and including colour neutrality and tonality is needed for harmony. Yet contemporary art movements have significantly challenged these assumptions. Op art, pop art, colour field artists and abstract expressionism are just a few examples of these challenges. Artworks require balance for integrity yet, like avant garde music, that balance can be achieved by developing harmony as chaos. Colour relations seem to be crucial. This is my fascination. Personally, I've had three solo exhibitions and seventeen group exhibitions and have sold art pieces for some years now. I've been winner or finalist in three prizes so consider myself an established artist. My motivation is to break the old rules of colour relations in order to find the beauty in the harmonic chaos.
