John 14 Dropcap, "L" for Four Holy Gospels Illumination Painting

The original to this dropcap was created for Crossway's Four Holy Gospels project. The "L" is the first letter of Jesus's words "Let not your hearts be troubled, Believe in God, believe all in me" from John 14. Artist Makoto Fujimura considers this magnificent chapter to be one of the highlights of John, as the chapter is full of unimaginable vista of hope and promises; and yet those who heard these words were in the depth of despair and facing the unknown darkness ahead. Jesus himself was about to enter Jerusalem to suffer, and yet his words describe a promise of another reality beyond the darkness. Fujimura hopes his art to reflect this abundant hope facing intractable darkness of our time. This illumination, therefore, is a prayer of hope.
