ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Saint John the Baptist, wild-haired and clothed in camel skin, gazes upwards with a look of imploring on his face, his hands raised in almost a gesture of a shrug, earnestly seeking God’s face. He is drawn in pencil on tracing paper, adhered over a heavily textured background of light blues and tans with silver in his irises and surrounding him. White gel pen lines flow out of his severed neck. Jesus said in John 13:16 that "Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him," which in John the Baptist's case basically translates to "I died tortured on a cross so don't act surprised when you get your head chopped off." Saint John the Baptist is an excellent example of why sometimes I hate God, because Their “plan” just seem stupid to me most of the time, and leads me to question why we would want to follow a God who basically promises as much death and destruction in this life as any other path. Obviously, this is just one way of seeing the reality of suffering, and it is one that leads to bitterness and distrust, so until we open up to a better way of looking at it we can just sit here and imitate Saint John, asking “Why the fuck did it have to happen like that?”
