Inspired by the Kalash tribe/community in the Hind Kush One of the last peoples of western Asia to retain their cultural legacy are the Kalasha of upper Pakistan, previously called Nuristan (first called Kafiristan). They survived many waves of invaders from neighbouring regions. One of the last of these named them Kafir Kalash, “Black Pagans,” after the black robes of the women, and their refusal to convert to Islam. The Kalash people follow a form of ancient Hinduism infused with local pagan/animist beliefs. Despite living in Pakistan, the animistic Kalash tribe never believed in drawing boundaries for females. Interestingly, this smallest minority group sets a trend of gender equality in an otherwise conservative country.

I am a London based artist working primarily with acrylics. I enjoy the versatility of the medium as I have the flexibility of choosing between a water colour approach, oil like approach or trying new ways. My paintings mostly start off as ideas and concepts, which I compose in my head. Once I’m happy with the subjects, the colours and the placement, I then translate this to my chosen medium. I use a lot of colour symbolism in my paintings and even match backgrounds with the subjects I paint.
