ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My work reflects the dialogue between the progression of art history against the natural world which produced the materials it is made from. Fragments, historical sculptures and motifs are reframed – mimicking as we do when curating by placing in a museum, domestic, or public setting – against natural, inhospitable and unforgiving landscapes, reflecting their journey against the constant. New composite scenes are thereby made using spolia from the past, just as historical precedents – notably the enduring theme of classicism – are continually repurposed and reimagined as history progresses. These Kouroi – idealised funerary totems from ca.5th century BC, discovered in 1867 in Actium (Punta) – now sit in the Louvre amongst its collection of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities, a sanitised and alien setting compared with their original creation. Here they are paired against a deliberately incongruous backdrop of Norwegian fjords to both mimic the absurdity of modern contemporary framing, and the constant force of nature from whence the stone came.

My work applies the visual analysis and research disciplines obtained in studying BA and MA art history at the Courtauld, London, to demonstrate that art is both a continuum and a language which speaks across time and space. Materials, styles and motifs evolve, as do curatorial methods; we attempt to imitate life in art, then continuously frame and reframe it. Running parallel is the constant destructive force of nature, which weathers and re-forms these imitations, unaffected by contemporary artistic concerns. To capture this dichotomy I create composites of artistic motifs, applied arts, decorative patterns and historical fragments with natural elements, often ironically playing on the illusionistic aspects of art imitating nature.
