ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A gift to my mother, this painting was inspired by dynamic landscapes and stormy skies of Lake Michigan. In the painting these aspects are complemented by a foreground of quiet beach. This foreground and background connect ironically through a broken fence opening up onto the lake. I hope viewers will feel thrilled and hopeful at the same time. Oil on canvas most suits this subject due to the layering of color, building of texture, and flow needed to represent nature-especially moving waters, moving skies.

Art and the Pandemic: The intricacies and interwoven-ness of human interaction have taken on a new shape in the context of COVID-19, but we are all still connected to each other. It is through our common humanity expressed in art (visual, written, musical, and more) that we reach across divides of language, culture, race, religion, gender, sexuality and disability. Through art, science, and culture, I believe that communication, connection, and collaboration are attainable. Artistic Vision: To engage in lively discourse about pressing concerns of the day through dialogue about art. My greatest aim is the resolution of suffering through artistic reflections on nature, color, lines, and the play between shadow and light, order and chaos with a nod toward Van Gogh, Kandinski, and Georgia O'Keefe. I venture to do this through representations of life through paintings of landscapes, still life, portraits, architecture, and recently abstract painting. Look for more figure drawings, paintings, and abstract representations of the human body in the future. Overall Vision: Inspired to create, collaborate, and communicate, I am an artist, a medical student, and an anthropologist striving to forge links between cultural artifacts, medical science, and the humanities. Through art, I would like to foster inner peace by bringing joy, inspiration, and little 'ah-ha' moments to people. If these things somehow lead to outer peace through the winding, complex, pot-holed road that connects our inner and outer selves, so be it. In addition to the visual arts, I write prose and poetry, which are my first and most natural expressive mediums.
