ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I initially began drawing with an interest in landscapes and in the representation of space, something more visible in my abstract works. In drawings and paintings, I reverse the traditional perspective, using instead personal composition grids based on the golden ratio. I was inspired to use them after seeing certain structures in the trees. They are based on recent math works, for instance from Sir Penrose, who in his youth used to correspond with M.C.Escher. Digital tools help me to "weave" my works in finished paintings that contradict the usual rules of space representation and perspective. The resulting images are a new, living creation in the world, not a replacement. The goal is to suggest space without using too much of darker tones and in a way that seems spontaneous, layering several color universes.

Fleur Thesmar (b. 1972; Paris, France) began an art career in her youth and returned after a burnout when she was a successful lobbyist in France. After moving to the US in 2015, she was enthralled by Californian landscapes. In creating her work, the shapes of the natural world are her primary inspiration: translating them into compelling works of oil and watercolor, as well as digital collage, photography and textile. She is inspired by nature’s inherent harmonies to inform her work in subject matter and material selection. Thesmar’s work is a synthesis of environmentally-aware artmaking, after she became allergic to preservatives contained in most commercial paints. As a result, Thesmar uses exclusively environmentally-friendly materials. While Thesmar examines how artwork can be the least environmentally toxic, she finds that there is still a wide range of media available. Thesmar’s artwork is an invitation to the viewer. She focuses her work on offering a range of aesthetic emotions to viewers, rather than imposing them. She invites contemplation of the environment, as well as a space for discovery and imagination. In order to translate such aspirations, Thesmar liberates the eye from a single point of perspective and experiments with geometry that allows the translation of perspective, space, and illusions of volume. Often her work features specific points of concentration based on 5-point stars, fractals, and the golden ratio. While Thesmar’s work is based in geometry, it also honors creative expression. Thesmar’s work appears in galleries across the US, Canada, UK, France, and private collections around the world.
