About The Artwork

Is spent 1 year of lockdown on the Island of Cyprus, the story of how aI ended up there is interesting enough not to mention the setting in which I lived, which was a small and rustic, time locked enclave, brimming with nature just beyond my doorstep and some times within too. Cyprus is a partitioned island and on either side of that partition are the ghost like orchards, vineyards and houses where once people lived and now lie empty, their occupants having left suddenly, never to return. There’s something haunting about that but there’s a beauty and an intimacy about the empty spaces that are left too. There’s a kind of sanctuary that one finds within them to the Tourist Orientated Modernity beyond. The natural world has always been my inspiration and trees are a big part of that. There’s a sense of communion about these works which goes beyond words. Throughout my stay, I was reminded of a fellow traveller, Van Gogh, who also, found himself under a similar sun transformed forever by its light.

Originally born in the Highlands of Scotland, I spent my childhood between there and Perthshire. The influence of the the North West runs particularly strongly in my paintings and also serves as a backdrop for many site specific 3 D work too. Originally my training was in sculpture and I spent the earlier part of my career Working on a commission and Residency Basis In The Public Art Field. Wood was my preferred medium for a number of years, particularly carving on a large scale before I diversified into painting, photography, installation and laterally bronze casting. There is a natural interplay of all these disciplines with each one informing the other. From 1999 to 2016, I worked as a Part - time Tutor at Edinburgh College of Art, leaving that position to concentrate more exclusively on my own free lance pursuits, combined with more extensive travel.
