About The Artwork

36" x 48" Acrylic on Canvas with Oil Pastels Cover artwork for upcoming novel by James S Young, Ph.D. "An energized volition illuminates the contradictions and paradoxes that reside within us all. At first, we see a man in a moment, neither invincible nor vulnerable, peaceful nor turbulent, crystal-clear nor murky. At reappraisal, we notice that the left and right sides of the painting depict distinctive domains of the dichotomy that is the human condition. Each side comprises intersecting planes of existence that are understood as either “light” or “dark”. At the scale of the brushstroke, there is a detailed conflation of philosophical arenas, giving rise to a cornucopia of unexamined struggles of the psyche. But pull out to full frame and we comprehend a simpler, bigger picture: a weathered soul, one we recognize in ourselves, one set in stillness for our inspection. The left side is that of light, the way. Gaze into the eye and hold your concentration. It is at once focused and resolute, sad and vulnerable. He has had his fair share of hard times, but remains as strong and heroic as always, defying the psychological tiredness that tugs upon his spirit. This is the side that moves forward. The right side is darkness and it inspires fear. But this is a darkness that we all live with and all survive. While it represents suffering, it is also profoundly interesting. It is the motor of turmoil and chaos. A frenzy of ghosts torment the dark side. And the mind is set alive like fire, electrifying the scalp and burning a trail, a mark of progress, the mark of living. This is the side where pain clears the way. The two sides are not independent, they are symbiotic. This individual, this “logical man”, is not independent either. These conceptual levels of existence belong to nature and they are at one with nature. This is seen on the left where the firework display of context licks at the hair of the logical man, crisping the split ends. On the right, there is a bath of composure to the rear of the sizzling mind, ready to quench the heat in desperate times. Colour, energy, dynamism, creativity of attack and technique, but what outshines the hard-earned expertise is the magical expression of the story within the painting. A story of a man that contains so much that he could be any one of us and all of us". (Review by J.S. Young, Ph.D.) #expressionist #expressionism #portrait #acrylic #painting #gallery # contemporaryart #madrid #london #cambridge #puertorico #logicalman

“Explosive brushstrokes and frenetic scribbles burst forth onto the wood. Oil pastels. Acrylic. These are grand scale portraits plucked from the commotion of red-raw emotion, intellectual reflection and the story that is born there. When there is darkness, I seek out the cracks. That’s where the narrator finds the light... as she paints. Inspired by the energy of the great Expressionists and Surrealists, this is intensely executed art that conflates the human figure and persistent motifs: silhouettes, eyes, animals and the mundane. Follow the white rabbit and see how deep the rabbit hole goes, as they say.” - MY. Michelle Yegros, a seasoned and prolific artist across many disciplines, from Illustration to CG Animation to Advertising Design, has recently put a welcome end to a 15-year hiatus in her classical painting. An impromptu trip to Spain managed to dislodge an artistic kidney stone and the rush for her paintbrush couldn’t have been quicker. The floodgates of creativity are now well and truly open. Welcome to the journey as it unfolds...
