"Man with a Cigar" I have to admit—I’m a little obsessed with smoking. And there’s something about what this painted smoker conveys power, contemplation, and rebellion all at once. This painting was born out of that fascination, capturing a fleeting moment of stillness and grit. I painted this pi...

Eva Levy is a London-based artist originally from France. At the core of her practice across painting, writing, and movement is an ongoing negotiation between intuition and control. She is drawn to the fragile balance between creative flow, which she experiences as spiritual and beyond conscious command, and the human act of shaping, refining, and deciding through technique, thought, and skill. Her work is rooted in instinctive processes such as automatic writing, improvisational movement, and rapid, intuitive painting. These approaches allow space for what she considers a form of surrender: stepping aside so that sensation, impulse, and the unknown can surface without being immediately rationalised. This openness to flow is central not only to her aesthetics but also to her mental and emotional equilibrium, offering a way to remain grounded while embracing uncertainty. In her abstract paintings, colour, gesture, and texture become vehicles for freedom and emergence, leaving room for accident, rhythm, and unseen forces to intervene. In contrast, her figurative and more representational works lean into human experiences. This translates into expressive interior chaos, showing vulnerability, desire, loss, and disorientation. Her portraits and scenes often reflect fragmented states of being, mirroring the instability of thought, memory, and identity. Across all media, Eva’s work circles a shared question: how to inhabit a world without clear answers. Her practice does not seek resolution, but presence: acknowledging confusion, intensity, and doubt as fundamental parts of being alive and creating. Her work is available through Saatchi Art, selected exhibitions, and private commissions.
