Art Description

Painting: Acrylic, Gesso, Pastel, Clay, Engraving on Ceramic, Marble.

The piece is a collage about local architecture. Buildings have different shape, sizes, colors — like people and their diversity, living on the same land, living together. Each one has a unique character, just like people. There is a theme that runs throughout my work about personal struggle, urban decay, spiritual renewal and the beauty inherent in a complicated urban environment. This piece where classic fine arts (clay, acrylic paints), technology (laser engraving) and soul are fused together.

Originally from Thailand, I am a full-time, community-based artist who primarily works with clay, acrylics, pastels and found materials to create images focused on local San Francisco architecture. Themes that resonate throughout Tan's work are those of personal struggle, urban decay, spiritual renewal and the beauty inherent in a complicated urban environment. His pieces are a meeting of classic fine arts, technology (laser engraving) and soul.
