View In My Room
2008, oil on canvas, 130x130 cm. Wandering El Prado Museum halls is one of my most treasured fondnesses, one I succumb to as often as I can. All about this painting started from that delightful corner of Brueghel's "Triumph of Death" where a skeleton farcicaly accompanies a couple of singing lovers on the vihuela. Though unaware of what goes around them, their lives are the only ones being, at least momentarily, spared. The title is a verse taken from "Here", a short poem written by Octavio Paz, but in fact we are talking here about a double theft because I really took it from Julio Cortázar novel "Hopscotch", where the poem is quoted. It reads like this: "My steps along this street resound in another street in which I hear my steps passing along this street in which Only the mist is real".
