ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"Nana" is a subject taken from Zola's novel of the same name. I depict her as a seasoned prostitute as she comes down from her once high status as a favorite among important figures in 19th century France, men who habitually take advantage of this accommodating women and lead to her demise. In this image she still retains her haughtiness but time has eroded her beauty and she has fallen into physical decay. The painting's image was form by a free-ranging process in which thinned-down acrylic paint suggested the shape of the face and its features. The process is akin to automatic image-making.
