ABOUT THE ARTWORK
A series of 'nest' paintings began after life circumstances led me to evaluate the meaning of security. The nest motif became a regular part of my art practice as I considered the emotional effects of change and life experiences. I used texture and value to create drama and surface interest, colour and brush work for atmospheric effects as each painting became an emotive and personal expression of a particular 'season'. In the tradition of the historic still life, these paintings speak to notions of strength and fragility, abundance and scarcity.

Alberta born, Cindy Bouwers is an artist and designer. After obtaining her BFA in Visual Communication Design and building a career as an accomplished graphic designer, as well as teaching design courses at the Alberta College of Art and Design, she decided to explore a long buried desire to paint and pursue her own artwork. This has led her along a new creative path and resulted in a rich body of work informed by her design background. Artist Statement Inspiration for a painting often comes from moments of quiet reflection, in watching the play of light, translating the shapes and patterns created in its path. I would like to bring the viewer into a shared experience, a moment of pleasure, a recognition of beauty, a sense of hope. Whether I'm painting from life or nonreferentially, I strive to evoke an emotional response from the viewer. Themes of hope and contentment enter into my work as I glean subject matter from nature and everyday experiences and express them with an emotive combination of colour, shape and texture.
