Jean McEwen Inspired by les Automatistes of Quebec and the mid century Abstract Expressionist movement, New World presents dark blacks and blues over a ground of brighter colours. New World was executed by hand painting with aggressive gouging to bring the underlying colours through. The challenge in abstract painting is always in the spontaneous decisions the painter makes. To not overthink, to discover the energy inherent in the canvas and colour placements, and to decide when to stop.
