About The Artwork
Framed original painting on a wooden cradled panel. Dimensions framed 13.5 x 13.5 inches. The contemporary style box frame is painted a soft white. It is ready to hang. The source for this [and the other 2 paintings entitled ‘North..] is a sketchbook filled while on a Hurtigruten ferry travelling up the coast of Norway, past the Lofoten Islands and on as far as Kirkenes. Although the journey took place in June [a few years ago], the weather became progressively cooler the further north we sailed. It was enlivening and fascinating. It is only now that I am using that sketchbook to translate the studies into paintings. This piece is on a premium cradled wood panel and painted with artist quality paints.

The landscape is my main source of subject for painting - particularly the orderly impact on the landscape of human habitation and farming. The framework imposed by fencing hedges ditches etc and the impact these divisions have on the land is always interesting. Colours lent to the land for a few months by growing crops is another element. The rather harsh lemon of the rape or mustard crops, the cool blue of a linseed field, the effervescent mixture of echinacea flowers - all these colours provide problems for an artist. While they are very dramatic , visually they don’t sit well with the native trees and hedge colours, but I am drawn to them as a subject on exactly that account. This is what inspires my work - colour.
