ABOUT THE ARTWORK

As a visual artist, and a portrait painter, I am fascinated with the free access to millions of selfies. You can scroll through random people’s lives: The food they had that morning, the variety of errands accomplished and the assortment of pastries and specialty coffees they had throughout the day. We isolate ourselves with our faces glued to our screens; obsessively scrolling through pictures whilst ironically posting the most private of moments: Here I am in my new underwear, here I am with my new lover, here I am completely nude with an eggplant emoji covering my genitals. What has happened to the very idea of privacy? It seems that we live privately online, for everyone to see. We are nurtured with “likes” rather than smiles or nods. These likes encourage this form of sharing because we appear to be in control. We control the amount of intimacy, a kind of fabricated intimacy, which ends up defining the persona we create.

During my formal training in University, i almost entirely focused on printmaking and design; mores specifically traditional and offset lithography and etching. With the inevitable layering of imagery forming the basis of printmaking, i was fascinated with the very technical and forceful methodology of this kind of art-making. After graduating, I realized that the medium of print wasn't easy to continue within the confines of my home studio. I had no printing presses and fork lifts to move large limestones around or massive sinks to clean them off. I had to change mediums and so i taught myself how to paint! Having been steeped in heavy step by step production for so long, I transferred this knowledge to painting: the science of colour mixing, the different layers of grounds and paints and oils applied. It seemed that my natural inclinations for the technical became easily applied to a painterly almost photo realism in painting. So here I am, many years later, a formed but still learning painter, painting portraits of gay men.
