About The Artwork

Late summer in my garden is always a wondrous surprise. These cabbages seemed so robust, colorful and proud sitting in their urns that I had to capture their beauty. I created the image with oils on linen, carefully rendering all the nuances of the plants, the urns, and the background. The painting is ready to hang; it is gallery-wrapped with the image painted along all four of the edges. This is a large, elegant and bright painting that will grace any room in your home or office.

I’m fascinated by the play of light on my subjects: landscapes, seascapes, woods and waters. Sometimes I paint in plein-air, at other times I work in my studios from sketches and reference photos. I normally work in oils on canvas, relying on the rich, smooth colors of my medium to capture the essence of my subjects. I try to capture scenes with bold and contrasting colors, with a minimum of layering on my canvas, an approach I call “Neo-Impressionist.” I like to think that my subject compels the viewer’s attention on my canvas just as much as my technique; and I always try to express a unique point of view, using vivid and rich color palettes, and bold lines and shadows that are unafraid of rendering the world in visually exciting and unpredictable ways. I enjoy the process of painting more than anything else: mixing gesso, stretching canvas, applying oils with brush or palette. I’m especially aware of my brushstrokes—I like them confident and direct. The way I can place color on the canvas and create an entirely new world is utterly fascinating to me. During my career I’ve lived and worked in the Virgin Islands, Tuscany, the American southwest, the Great Lakes, France, and Japan—all of which have given me important inspiration. I exhibit in the Midwest and nationally, and my work is included in numerous public and private collections. I’m also a member of the Oil Painters of America, the American Impressionist Society, and American Women Artists where I occasionally exhibit work.
